Due to the attempt at martial law, the president of South Korea is accused of insurrection.

Yoon Suk Yeol, the ousted president of South Korea, was accused of insurrection when he tried to impose martial law in December.

He became the first sitting president in South Korean history to face criminal charges after his disastrous attempt to establish military authority sent the nation into an unheard-of political crisis.

The indictment follows a Seoul court's Saturday rejection of a request to prolong Yoon's custody, forcing prosecutors to decide by Monday whether to charge or free him.

"The punishment of the ringleader of insurrection now begins finally," said Han Min-soo, a representative of the Democratic Party, the largest opposition party, at a press conference.

South Korea was rocked by fear, rage, and victory for six hours.
